Applications are becoming smaller, lighter and more intelligent. The demands on the energy supply in these areas are therefore constantly increasing. VARTA is considered a pioneer with its CoinPower® cell product family. In order to continue to fulfill this role in the future, VARTA is researching new ways to improve its products while at the same time using less scarce and more environmentally friendly resources. The focus is on the further development of the anode, cathode and other cell components.

Research projects

Advanced material solutions for safer and longer-lasting high-capacity cobalt-free batteries for stationary storage applications.

The project focuses on ecologically and economically sensible production and recycling of lithium-ion batteries.

Silicon-Graphene: upscaling the production of high-quality anode materials to the tonne-per-year scale

The project aims to develop and produce improved carbon-silicon composite anode materials, with increased cycle stability and improved energy density for lithium-ion batteries.

Development of high-energy lithium-ion battery cells for mobile applications by combining highly innovative nickel-rich cathode materials and silicon-dominant anodes.

PerForManZ focuses on the development of perforated foil arresters and silicon anodes for resource-saving material use in sustainable cell technology.

3D-Si-Elektrode

The project pursues the integration of fabric-based current collectors in VARTA cells, as well as a process for the production of mechanically and structurally stable three-dimensional silicon anodes for Li-Ion batteries. In addition to a significantly higher storage capacity of the cells, the use of copper should be massively reduced and the use of domestic resources of glass and carbon established.

The greenSPEED project provides solutions for new sustainable electrode and cell manufacturing processes with reduced energy consumption, lower carbon footprint and ZERO emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). greenSPEED aims to secure Europe’s leadership in the production of batteries with a lower carbon footprint by improving production processes and establishing them in Europe.
