Primary or rechargeable battery?
The difference between primary and secondary batteries is not just a question of recharging capability. One issue that needs to be considered, for example, is that secondary batteries self-discharge to a higher degree.
The aggregate voltage of a battery is the sum of the voltages of the individual cells. Different voltages can be produced by sequentially configuring individual cells. The stability of the battery voltage over the period of use is influenced by the battery technology that is used.
The amount of storage energy is determined by the technology, size and number of cells. A higher capacity requirement does, however, mean the battery weighs more and requires more space.
Applications with a high power draw, such as battery-powered tools, need batteries that can emit the stored energy quickly and at as even a voltage as possible. To this end, the battery’s internal resistance must be as low as possible.

The weight of the battery may also be important, depending on the intended application. The weight is determined by the type of cell. Lithium batteries, for example, are lightweight and therefore ideal for use in Wearables.
Battery function is influenced by storage and operating temperatures. Service life, capacity, charge acceptance and discharge rate are some of the factors that are affected by temperature. As such, the choice of cell type must ensure compliance with the performance requirements over the entire temperature range of the application.
Over the last 50 years, batteries have become considerably more environmentally compatible. Nevertheless, to this day they still contain harmful substances that necessitate separate disposal. The contaminant load differs, depending on the type of battery. The use of resource-saving rechargeable batteries does exert a positive influence on the environmental balance.
