Respect for human rights is an integral part of the VARTA AG-Group’s corporate responsibility. Appropriate policies, processes and measures are in place to address human rights and labour-related requirements.

The VARTA AG-Group aims to further develop working conditions, including occupational health and safety. In addition, employees are offered opportunities for professional and personal development.

The VARTA AG-Group also participates in social and charitable initiatives.


Acting responsibly

The VARTA AG-Group is committed to respecting human rights and has embedded corresponding requirements in its policies and processes. Human rights due diligence and responsible sourcing are addressed through defined procedures and governance frameworks.

To implement these requirements, the VARTA AG-Group has established a human rights due diligence management system. This system includes defined responsibilities, risk assessments, a grievance mechanism, and processes for the identification, assessment, and management of human rights and environmental risks within its own operations and throughout the supply chain.

In addition, the VARTA AG-Group applies a risk-based approach and implements documented preventive and remedial measures. The framework is complemented by procedures for reviewing and further developing existing processes.

  • Human Rights Policy Statement
    The > Human Rights Policy Statement describes VARTA AG-Group's strategic approach to due diligence and its organisational implementation, e.g. in the form of guidelines and procedures. The document is therefore a central component of the due diligence management system and an important part of the fulfilment of legal and customer-related requirements.
     
  • Modern Slavery Statement
    The VARTA AG-Group acts in accordance with the international framework conditions, in particular the relevant conventions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), and has incorporated their requirements into its processes and guidelines. > Statement
     
  • Supplier Code of Conduct
    Business partners and suppliers undertake to comply with the > Supplier Code of Conduct, which combines standards from international frameworks with the company's core values. In addition, they trickle down the requirements of the Code to their own suppliers in the value chain.
     
  • Due Diligence Reporting
    The VARTA AG-Group maintains a management system for the fulfilment of due diligence obligations for minerals in accordance with the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas (CAHRA). The management system and current developments are presented in the annual > Due Diligence Reporting.

  • Responsible Sourcing Policy
    The VARTA AG-Group has established a management system for mineral and metal supply chains as part of its due diligence framework.The system aims to mitigate the existing and potential risks of these supply chains and to support the respect and promotion of human rights, including the fight against child and forced labour, as well as strengthenin the rights of indigenous peoples. As part of the development of the due diligence management system, the > Responsible Sourcing Policy was issued which is based on the current OECD guidelines and communicates VARTA AG-Group's values and requirements to suppliers of conflict and high-risk minerals.

SEDEX SMETA-4-Pillar Social Audit

In 2025, the Brașov site and in 2026 the Ellwangen site successfully completed a SEDEX SMETA 4-Pillar Audit. The SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) is conducted on-site by independent auditors and is one of the most widely recognized standards for assessing ethical and social business practices worldwide. The audit evaluates working conditions, health and safety, environmental management, and business ethics.

Workplace Conditions Assessment (WCA)

In 2022, all five production sites were audited according to the WCA Standard. All audited locations achieved a Workplace Performance Index of over 85 % and therefore finished with a very good overall result. Aspects audited include labour, wages and hours, health and safety, management systems and environment.
