Environment


The VARTA AG-Group aims to integrate environmental considerations into its business processes and decision-making. To support this objective, environmental management systems and related processes are used to systematically address environmental aspects and manage relevant requirements. In addition, the Company relies on innovation, continuous improvement, as well as research and development, to identify opportunities for more efficient resource use and to further develop processes throughout the value chain.


Climate management

The VARTA AG-Group considers climate-related risks and opportunities in relevant business and decision-making processes. In doing so, regulatory requirements, financial impacts, resilience, as well as potential market and business developments are taken into account. In addition, relevant stakeholder interests across the value chain, including customers, investors, and local communities, are considered. Since 2022, the VARTA AG-Group has been implementing the guidelines of TCFD. The company is continuously enhancing its reporting on the management of climate risks and opportunities. These are categorised into transition and physical, with a dedicated programme designed for each.

  • Verification of greenhouse gas emissions
    The VARTA AG-Group is committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its entire value chain. To support the management and monitoring of its emissions, Scope 3 emissions were calculated for the first time in 2022. The Group's total greenhouse gas emissions for 2023 were independently verified by a third party,
     
  • Science Based Target Initiative
    With climate targets validated by the > Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) in 2025, the VARTA AG-Group has committed to an emissions reduction pathway aligned with the 1.5°C goal.
  • Climate Transition Plan
    By 2030, we aim to meet 100 % of our global electricity demand with renewable energy and reduce our Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by at least 42 % compared to 2020. 
    In addition, we aim to reduce the emissions intensity across our value chain by 51.6 %. To achieve this, we focus on key impact areas such as purchased goods and services, the use and end-of-life phases of our products, upstream energy consumption, production waste and employee commuting.

Environmental Management

The VARTA AG-Group follows a structured approach to environmental management. This includes management systems, defined processes, and regular reviews to systematically address environmental aspects at its sites. In addition, continuous improvements in relevant environmental processes are pursued.

  • ISO certficates
    The VARTA AG-Group's sites hold certifications in the areas of quality, environment, and energy management. These certifications are regularly assessed by independent third parties. > Downloads
     
  • Product Responsibility and Recycling
    Environmental aspects are considered throughout the entire life cycle of the VARTA AG-Group's products. Relevant environmental requirements are taken into account during product development and manufacturing. In addition, end-of-life aspects, including the collection and recycling of batteries, are considered.   • Circular economy
    The VARTA AG-Group fulfills its extended producer responsibility obligations through participation in collection schemes such as the Joint Collection System (Gemeinsames Rücknahmesystem). In 2025, this collection scheme achieved a collection rate of 54.1 % and a recycling rate of 95.6 % for portable batteries in its markets (GRS). Secondary raw materials recovered through recycling processes can be used in various industrial applications.
    Environmental and recyclability aspects are also considered in product packaging. For product groups carrying the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, requirements apply regarding the use of recycled materials in packaging.
