VARTA Starts Most Advanced Home Storage Production in Germany

New production line in Ellwangen secures European leadership in the energy storage market, creates 120 new jobs, and strengthens the regional economy.

In June, the first production line at the Neunheim site near Ellwangen in Baden-Württemberg went into full-scale production. The modularly expandable DC high-voltage storage system has been rolling off the production line since then and will be delivered from mid-July.

With the VARTA.wall, VARTA expands its product portfolio in the rapidly growing energy storage market, thus making an important contribution to strengthening the European storage market and supporting the energy transition through decentralized solutions that reduce dependency on fossil fuels and thereby CO2 emissions. Additionally, the company promotes value creation in Germany by using predominantly components from local suppliers for the VARTA.wall and creating around 120 new jobs in the region. In the first expansion phase, up to 50,000 storage units will leave the plant annually.

Sven Riehm, Executive Vice President of Power Batteries, stated, "Our first VARTA.wall production line is now fully operational. We are producing on 4,000 square meters according to the latest Industry 4.0 standards. Our plant in Neunheim near Ellwangen has space for a second module line, allowing us to double our production volume in the future and expand into a gigafactory. In addition to our strong presence in the the German-speaking region, this will enable us to tap into and serve additional expansion potential in the rest of Europe.

Rainer Hald, CTO of VARTA AG adds: "The new production line is a strategic investment in the future of our company as well as in Germany as an industrial location. The market for energy storage has been growing dynamically for many years, and we offer powerful products for this market under the VARTA name, which customers rightly trust."

Most Modern Manufacturing Technology and “Made in Germany”
The renowned company has invested around 20 million euros in the state-of-the-art production line covering approximately 4,000 square meters. The semi-automated production includes, among other things, a highly modern laser welding process, plasma cleaning, laser marking, as well as automatic gluing and assembly stations.

The production equipment of the plant was entirely designed, planned, and mostly manufactured by German specialists and machine builders. VARTA has optimized all processes in the new factory to enable resource- and energy-saving production – in line with the company's philosophy of developing and producing batteries for a sustainable future.

Rainer Hald: "At VARTA, we rely on Germany as an industrial location and are convinced that we must not leave the renewable energy market in Europe solely to manufacturers in Asia or the USA. Batteries and energy storage systems are key technologies that we need to maintain and secure in Europe. VARTA has been making an important contribution here for many years with development and production in Germany."

To secure the site in the long term, VARTA relies on hiring and training skilled workers. Sven Riehm explains: "With the new production facility, we are creating around 120 new jobs in various areas such as quality, process technology, and production. The personnel expansion and the new factory provide important impulses for strengthening the region."

VARTA.wall Ultra-Slim, Modular and Powerful
The VARTA.wall impresses as a modular, plug-in DC high-voltage system with easy installation without external wiring of the modules and with only 10 cm installation depth. Equipped with the latest 21700 round cells in the VARTA double module, it is available with system capacities of 10, 15, and 20 kilowatt-hours and can be retrofitted.

From June 19 to 21, VARTA will open its doors to interested visitors at SMARTER E in Munich, Europe’s largest trade fair alliance for the energy industry. On a 350-square-meter booth in B1 / 210, VARTA will present its extensive energy storage portfolio this year, provide insights into the new VARTA.wall production line, and give a first glimpse into the future of its energy storage portal
