Energy for Medical Technology: from Fitness Trackers to Insulin Pumps

VARTA Microbattery and VARTA Storage at Medica 2018

For some years now, medical technology has been among the sectors generating the most patent applications. Innovations and ongoing development for ever more application are increasingly dependent on an efficient energy supply that is precisely tailored to the individual requirements. The exploding popularity of sports medical technology also demands custom-tailored solutions, as do hearables and wearables. At the Medica trade show in Düsseldorf, November 12 through 15 2018, VARTA Microbattery and VARTA Storage will be showcasing high-performance microbatteries, standardized and customer-specific power packs and hydrogen gas generator cells to meet the wide variety of medical-technology challenges in hall 15, booth A23. “Our rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are innovation leaders. With our targeted research efforts, we are constantly working to develop even better products for medical technology in particular by leveraging our 130 years of know-how in battery technology,” says Herbert Schein, CEO of VARTA AG.

An even smaller, flatter energy source

VARTA Microbattery is presenting three new lithium-ion cell types in its proven CoinPower series: CP 0854, CP9440 and CP7840. The latter two are only four millimeters high. VARTA Microbattery’s product portfolio is ideal for powering headsets and fitness trackers, as well as patient monitoring devices and insulin pumps. “We’re continually working to miniaturize our cells, and this enables manufacturers to design ever smaller and flatter devices,” says Matthias Dorsch, Product Manager VARTA Microbattery GmbH. The cylindrical form factor and high energy density of the CoinPower series make these batteries ideal for use in the wearables and medical segments. Rapid recharging, high resilience and a sturdy design round out the profile of these cells. To date, the CoinPower series has generated numerous patents, including the i-Lock system, which together with other features enables an energy density up to 30 percent greater than comparable batteries on the market.

VARTA Microbattery offers not only rechargeable cells but also primary lithium and silver oxide button cells, which represent an optimum power solution for compact medical devices thanks to their reliability and durability. They are specially designed for applications such as blood glucose monitors, fever thermometers and blood pressure monitors.

The perfect power pack solutions for medical devices

The Power and Energy division is at Medica to exhibit its high-performance battery solutions for wearable medical devices such as dental devices and surgical instruments. Whether standardized CellPac LITE, semi-customized CellPac BLOX in various designs or bespoke power pack solutions – VARTA Storage has the right energy solution for any customer requirement. All the products are based on advanced lithium-ion technology and exhibit excellent performance and safety standards. The CellPac LITE series is already certified to UN38.3, UL 1642, IEC62133 and a number of products have UL2054 certification. This makes it easier to achieve IEC 60601-1 certification for medical standards.

Hydrogen gas generating cells for applications that supply their own energy

The mercury-free hydrogen gas generating cells from VARTA Microbattery are the optimum solution for mobile, energy self-sufficient medical applications such as vaccination and infusion systems. VARTA has gas generating cells with ultrapure hydrogen to suit any type of displacement application for liquids, pastes, gels and granules or for analysis/sensor applications.
