VARTA sets sign for its Baden-Württemberg presence with ground-breaking ceremony for new corporate headquarters

Together with the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann, the Executive Board of VARTA AG officially starts construction of the new, seven-storey company headquarters in Ellwangen.

VARTA AG is starting another chapter in its company history: On Thursday, 30th June 2022, work officially began on the new headquarters of the global technology company with a ground-breaking ceremony. The ceremony was the highlight of the visit of Baden-Württemberg's Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann to VARTA.

Herbert Schein, CEO of VARTA AG: “Today is a special day for VARTA. We have been here in Ellwangen for 75 years. That is more than half of our 135-year company history. And here in Ellwangen, we are continuing this story with another important chapter. When we break ground today for the new building of our company headquarters here in Ellwangen, it is a sign: for our presence in Baden-Württemberg and for Germany as an important centre for the battery technology of the future.”

The new seven-storey building features a roof-top terrace, two additional basement floors, and a height of more than 30 meters. It offers space for around 400 employees and around 1000 square meters of additional space for research and development. The design of the building takes into account the needs of modern working culture with open structures and flat hierarchies. It is intended to improve communication and accelerate processes. The corporate headquarters are being built with sustainability in mind. The construction ensures that as little ground as possible is being sealed. The move into the new building is scheduled for 2024.

Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann: “Companies like VARTA are taking the lead in technology. Promoting the production of high-performance and sustainable battery cells in Europe, Germany and here in Baden-Württemberg is of great strategic importance. It's about jobs, resilience and securing our prosperity. It's about putting our economy at the forefront of the latest technologies. This is what VARTA stands for. The state government of Baden-Württemberg is very proud of this.”

Kretschmann was a guest at VARTA together with representatives from state and federal politics as well as from the administration of the city of Ellwangen. The administrator of the Ostalb district, Dr. Joachim Bläse had to cancel his personal participation at short notice due to illness. He was represented by the First State Officer Gabriele Seefried.

Bläse: "I am very pleased that VARTA is making such a clear commitment to the Ellwangen location with the construction of the new company headquarters. Technological innovations, sustainability and future-oriented forms of work will be ideally combined in this building.”

In addition to the ground-breaking, a tour of the new training centre in Ellwangen was also on the agenda. Schein: "Here we are training the battery experts of tomorrow. We are not only securing our future. We also ensure that the know-how in battery technology from our 135-year history helps to develop and build the batteries of the future. Because one thing is clear: modern, intelligent and innovative energy storage is the future.”

Kretschmann: “High-tech technology is not possible without clever minds who can apply this technology. With the new training centre, VARTA is not only committed to the Ellwangen location, but above all to the training of young people. I am pleased that VARTA is taking part in the “5 companies in 5 days” internship weeks. The young people have the opportunity to get to know different professions and different companies within 5 days. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved.”

Bläse: “As a technology and high-tech location, the Ostalbkreis is a strong part of the innovative state of Baden-Württemberg and wants to remain such. Our most important resource are qualified and motivated specialists. With in-house training and in such a supportive environment, VARTA is investing in exactly the right place for the future.”
