VARTA increases energy density of lithium-ion batteries by around 30 percent and extends again its innovation lead.

VARTA AG, technology and innovation leader in rechargeable lithium-ion cells for high-tech consumer products, in particular for true wireless headsets, now increases the energy density of lithium-ion cells, the CoinPower-series, by around 30 percent. VARTA’s lithium-ion cells are characterized by high energy density, high quality and safety. The energy density is crucial for the new generations of headsets for which an even longer running time is a key selling point.

Only a few weeks ago, VARTA announced a 15 percent increase in energy density. This means that with a 14 mm diameter battery (CP1454), typical for headsets, almost 100 mAh are achieved now, compared to the previous generation with 85 mAh. Due to further improvements in electrochemistry, even more precise production technology and optimisation of the cells, in the second half of the year 110 mAh will be achieved for this type. All in all, VARTA increases the energy density of the cells by around 30 percent within one year. With this step, VARTA once again sets the industry standard and extends its innovation lead over its competitors.

VARTA has a very successful business model for lithium-ion. In addition to its technology and innovation leadership, VARTA is distinguished by its own tool and machine construction and highly automated mass production. Therefore VARTA offers its customers a very high standard of quality. In addition, an extensive patent portfolio safeguards the business model.

The demand for VARTA lithium-ion batteries for high-tech consumer products, especially for hearables, remains very high in a market that is growing at around 30 percent annually. Therefore, VARTA AG has recently announced to expand again the production capacity significantly and faster than originally planned.

VARTA AG produces and markets a comprehensive battery portfolio, ranging from microbatteries, household batteries, energy storage systems to customer-specific battery solutions for a wide range of applications, and, as a technology leader, sets industry standards in key areas. As the parent company of the Group, it operates in the business segments “Microbatteries & Solutions” and “Household Batteries”.

The “Microbatteries & Solutions” segment focuses on the OEM business for microbatteries as well as on the lithium-ion battery pack business. Through intensive research and development, VARTA sets global standards in the microbattery sector and is a recognized innovation leader in the important growth markets of lithium-ion technology and primary hearing aid batteries. The “Household Batteries” segment comprises the battery business for end customers, including household batteries, rechargeable batteries, chargers, portable power (power banks) and lights as well as energy storage devices. The VARTA AG Group currently employs almost 4,000 people. With five production and manufacturing facilities in Europe and Asia, and distribution centers in Asia, Europe and the USA, VARTA AG’s operating subsidiaries are currently active in over 75 countries worldwide.
